๐ Central government employees: NPS or UPS?
Since 1 April 2025, central government employees can choose the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), an option within the National Pension System, instead of the standard NPS. Existing employees had until 30 November 2025 to choose (as reported), and new recruits choose within 30 days of joining.
UPS promises 50% of the average basic pay of the last 12 months after 25 years of qualifying service, and a minimum of โน10,000 a month after 10 years of service. This calculator covers standard NPS only. It does not work out a UPS pension, so check with your department which scheme you are in before you rely on any figure here.

What this calculator models
A personalised, month-by-month projection from your own service history and dates - not a generic average, and not something a calculator-free estimate can reproduce without doing the same arithmetic against your own numbers:
- Date of birth and date of joining
- Retirement age, or a specific retirement date
- Current Tier-1 and Tier-2 balances
- Current basic pay and DA rate
- Government and employee contribution rates
- Annual increment, and the month it applies
- Superannuation or VRS, with its minimum qualifying service
- Expected return and the annuity rate at retirement
At retirement the corpus splits into a lump sum and an annuity: 60:40 for superannuation under PFRDA's Exits and Withdrawals Regulations (checked 22 September 2026). For VRS you choose the split, 20% lump sum and 80% annuity or 60% lump sum and 40% annuity, because departments differ; confirm the one that applies with your department. The monthly pension comes from the annuity portion at the rate you enter.
What is a rule, and what is your own scenario
Sourced and dated: the DA rate, the government's contribution share and the 60:40 superannuation split each come from a government source checked on a specific date - see methodology.
Yours to choose: expected return, the annuity rate, your annual increment and your retirement age (58, 60 or another), your VRS date and your VRS split (20:80 or 60:40, as your department allows) are choices you set, not predictions - try a low, a middle and a high figure rather than trusting one number. Real market returns and future policy changes will move your actual corpus away from any single projection, including this one.
โ Frequently Asked Questions - NPS Calculator for Government Employees
What is an NPS calculator for government employees?
An NPS calculator for government employees is a free retirement planning tool that calculates your retirement corpus based on your current salary, government and employee contributions, annual increments, and expected market returns using monthly compounding.
How accurate is this NPS pension calculator?
This calculator uses monthly compounding with government and employee contributions, annual salary increments, and the expected return you enter. It is an estimate: actual pension corpus varies with market performance, salary revisions and policy changes. Compare it with your official NPS account statement.
What is VRS and how do I check VRS eligibility?
VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme) allows eligible government employees to retire before the mandatory retirement age. This calculator checks VRS eligibility based on your completed service years (minimum 20 years required). The VRS option lets you plan retirement from a specific month-year of your choosing.
Is this NPS calculator free?
Yes, this NPS calculator for government employees is free. It runs in your browser and needs no registration or payment. What you type is not sent to GoldC or uploaded to a server.
Does this pension calculator work for all government employees?
It models standard NPS for central government, state government and autonomous body employees, using the government contribution percentage you enter. It does not model the Unified Pension Scheme, and your department's own rules may differ, so treat the result as an estimate.
What are Tier-1 and Tier-2 accounts in NPS?
Tier-1 is the main retirement account with locked-in funds until retirement. Tier-2 is an optional voluntary savings account with higher flexibility. Government employees typically have Tier-1 accounts; Tier-2 is discretionary.
