8th CPC Salary 2026: Expected Pay, Fitment Factor & Calculator

What is official about the 8th CPC today, how a fitment factor turns basic pay into new basic pay, and how the calculator works.

Reading time: 8 minutes โ€ข For: Indian government employees following the 8th Pay Commission

Latest status (September 2026): The Government of India constituted the 8th Central Pay Commission by notification dated 3 November 2025, with Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as chairperson. The Commission is taking memoranda and holding hearings. It has not submitted its report, and no new pay scale or fitment factor has been notified. News reports say it has 18 months from constitution to report, which would be around May 2027; check the Terms of Reference on the official site.

The Commission's own site and PIB notices are the official sources; news reports fill in the rest. Government employees across India are waiting for the report and for the government's decision on it.

What this guide covers: what is official today, what happened with the 7th CPC in 2016 according to PIB, and how the calculator estimates a new basic pay from a fitment factor you choose.

Use our free 8th CPC salary calculator to try your own figures. Its results are scenarios, not official numbers.

What the 8th CPC salary calculator does

  • Applies a fitment factor you choose (1.8 to 3.0) to your current basic pay to estimate the new basic pay
  • Rounds the new basic pay up to the next โ‚น100 and shows the rounding
  • Compares current and estimated pay side by side: basic pay, DA, HRA and the monthly total
  • Shows the monthly and annual increase, in rupees and as a percentage
  • Starts DA at 0% on the estimated basic pay, an assumption stated with the result
  • Optional HRA at 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay for X, Y or Z class cities
  • Estimates arrears from an implementation date, with or without HRA
  • Labels every figure an estimate: the 8th Pay Commission has not reported, so no new pay scale is official
  • Runs in the browser; what you type is not sent to or stored on a server, and a summary can be shared on WhatsApp

Who want to see how a fitment factor turns basic pay into a new basic pay

โœ“ Readers following the news

Who want to know what is official and what is only an estimate

๐Ÿ’ก Please note: nothing here is an official figure or advice. The 8th CPC has not reported.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Where the Official News Appears

The 8th CPC has been constituted but has not reported, so any new pay figure you see online is an estimate. The official sources are the Commission's own site and PIB; news outlets report on the timeline:

๐Ÿ’ก Note:

Official 8th CPC news appears on the Commission's site, in PIB notices and in Ministry of Finance announcements. News reports and estimates are not official.

๐Ÿ“… What is the 8th Pay Commission? Understanding 8th CPC Salary 2026

A Central Pay Commission reviews the pay, allowances and pensions of central government employees and recommends changes. The government then decides what to accept. Past commissions have come about ten years apart, and the 8th CPC salary review will follow the same process.

Timeline:

  • 20066th CPC pay revision, effective 1 January 2006
  • 20167th CPC pay revision, effective 1 January 2016; Cabinet approval on 29 June 2016
  • 20258th CPC constituted on 3 November 2025. It has not reported

What the 8th CPC will recommend, and what the government will accept, is not known.

๐Ÿ“‚ What Happened in 2016? (The 7th CPC, for Reference)

The 7th CPC shows how the steps ran last time. It is a reference, not a prediction: the 8th CPC can reach different conclusions and the government can decide differently.

One fitment factor for every level: 2.57

The Cabinet approved the 7th CPC's recommendations on 29 June 2016, effective 1 January 2016, with a fitment factor of 2.57 applied across all levels in the pay matrix. PIB's summary put the increase in pay at 16% and the combined increase in pay, allowances and pensions at 23.55% over the "business as usual" scenario.

The multiplier was applied to pay in which dearness allowance had built up over the years, which is why a factor of 2.57 did not mean pay received rose by 157%.

๐Ÿ”ข 8th Pay Commission Salary Fitment Factor: the One Number the Estimate Depends On

The fitment factor is the multiplier that turns your current basic pay into a new basic pay.

Old Basic Pay ร— Fitment Factor = New Basic Pay

Quick example: if your current basic is โ‚น50,000 and the fitment factor is 1.84, the new basic in this calculation is โ‚น92,000.

What will the 8th CPC fitment factor be?

Honest answer: nobody knows yet, and this guide does not predict it. The 8th CPC has not reported and no fitment factor has been announced.

For reference, the 7th CPC used 2.57 for every pay level (PIB). That multiplier was applied to pay in which dearness allowance had built up, so it did not mean pay received rose by 157%. The 8th CPC may use a different factor or a different method.

โš ๏ธ IMPORTANT:

The calculator's default of 1.84 is a starting scenario, not a forecast and not an official figure. It accepts any value from 1.5 to 3.5, so you can compare several.

โ„น๏ธ 5 Common Misunderstandings About 8th CPC Estimates

1. Treating a fitment factor as a percentage rise

Reality: A fitment factor of 1.84 does not mean a 184% increase. It means the new basic pay is 1.84 times the old one. What changes in the pay you receive also depends on how DA and allowances are treated afterwards.

2. Treating an estimate as an official figure

Reality: The 8th CPC has not reported. Any figure on this site is a scenario built from a fitment factor you choose. Lenders and departments need official documents.

3. Assuming DA behaves as the calculator models it

Reality: The calculator models DA as 0% on the new basic pay. That is an assumption for the tool. How DA is treated under the 8th CPC has not been decided.

4. Reading the result as take-home pay

Reality: The calculator estimates basic pay, HRA and arrears. It does not calculate income tax, deductions or other allowances, so take-home pay will differ.

5. Expecting a date for arrears

Reality: Arrears depend on the government's decision after the Commission reports, including the date from which any revision applies. The 1 January 2026 date in the calculator is a placeholder you can change.

๐Ÿฆฎ How to Calculate 8th Pay Commission Salary: the Formula, Step by Step

This is the arithmetic our free 8th CPC salary calculator uses. It is the tool's own method, not an official formula. Example figures: basic โ‚น50,000, DA 61%, fitment factor 1.84.

Step 1: Your current numbers

  • โœ“ Basic pay, from your latest pay slip: โ‚น50,000
  • โœ“ Dearness Allowance (DA) at 61%: โ‚น30,500
  • โœ“ Current basic plus DA: โ‚น80,500

Step 2: New basic pay

  • โœ“ Basic pay ร— fitment factor: โ‚น50,000 ร— 1.84
  • โœ“ Rounded up to the next โ‚น100: โ‚น92,000

Step 3: HRA (if you include it)

  • โœ“ X city: 30% of basic pay. Example: โ‚น27,600 on the new basic
  • โœ“ Y city: 20% of basic pay
  • โœ“ Z city: 10% of basic pay

Step 4: Total and difference

New basic + DA (modelled as 0%) + HRA if included. Example without HRA: โ‚น92,000 against โ‚น80,500 now, a difference of โ‚น11,500 a month.

Step 5: Arrears (if the date used is in the past)

(New monthly โˆ’ old monthly) ร— months from the implementation date you use to today. The default date is a placeholder, not an announced date.

๐Ÿ’ฐ 8th Pay Commission Salary Increase: Worked Examples

Three basic pay figures worked through the calculator at its default scenario (fitment factor 1.84, DA 61%, no HRA). The fitment factor is a scenario, not an official figure.

๐Ÿ’ก These are estimates from a fitment factor of 1.84 that you can change. The real outcome depends on decisions not yet made. Try your own figures in the calculator.

๐Ÿงพ What an 8th CPC Estimate Does and Does Not Cover

A pay estimate is one number among many that make up what you receive. Here is what the calculator includes and what it leaves out:

Included

  • โ€ข New basic pay: current basic pay times the fitment factor you enter, rounded up to the next โ‚น100
  • โ€ข DA, modelled as 0% on the new basic pay
  • โ€ข HRA, if you include it, at 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay by city category
  • โ€ข Arrears, as the monthly difference times the months since the implementation date you use

Left out

  • โ€ข Income tax and any deduction from your pay slip
  • โ€ข Other allowances, such as travel allowance
  • โ€ข Changes to the pay matrix or to pay levels
  • โ€ข Any decision on DA, allowances or the date of effect that the government has not yet made

Pensions

Pay commissions also review pensions. The calculator does not estimate pension or family pension; any revision follows the government's decision on the Commission's report and is handled by the pension-paying authority.

๐Ÿ”„ What Else Could a Pay Revision Touch?

A pay commission can look at more than basic pay. What the 8th CPC recommends on each item below is not known.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Basic Pay

The pay matrix and how existing pay is converted to new pay, which is where the fitment factor comes in.

๐Ÿ“Š Dearness Allowance (DA)

How DA is treated when pay is revised. The calculator models it as 0% on the new basic, which is its own assumption.

๐Ÿฆ Pension & Gratuity

Pay commissions also review pensions. Any revision follows the government's decision.

๐Ÿ’ณ Other Allowances

May be reviewed as well. Depends on the final decision.

The calculator needs only a few figures from your latest pay slip. Here is where each one comes from:

โฐ When Will 8th CPC Actually Happen? (Timeline & What to Expect)

The billion-rupee question, right? Here's the reality check:

Where things stand: the Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and is taking evidence. News reports say it has 18 months to report (around May 2027). After that the government must accept the report and notify the new pay scales, and arrears can only follow that decision.

Nobody can give you a payment date today. The 7th CPC shows how long each step can take; its dates below are only for comparison.

The 7th CPC for reference: constituted in February 2014, report submitted in November 2015, accepted by the government in June 2016 with effect from 1 January 2016, and arrears paid later in 2016.
